THE EcoNewMexico REPORT

Sandy Cunningham | Communications Director

The past 4 months have been incredibly busy ones for our EcoNewMexico team – we have conducted 3 EcoTourism Workshops in Chama, Silver City and Taos and the turnout and reception was incredibly positive. In each area we have assessed the local ecotourism assets and have met some wonderful folks all very committed in partnering to make this Statewide EcoTourism vision a reality for our State. Each region has an EcoTourism committee whose primary goal is to keep “the fire lit” and to continue working towards a viable and sustainable ecotourism product n their areas.

We have met with many Native American communities, the Jicarilla Apache, the Pueblo’s of Laguna and Acoma to name a but a few. We have also met with many State offices, Economic Development, Cultural Affairs and Indian Affairs as well as the State Land and BLM offices. In addition to these we have travelled the length and breadth of this state meeting with private land owners, guides, outfitters and eco-enthusiasts.

I spent the better part of October and November travelling to some of the leading Adventure and Travel shows, to spread the word about our exciting EcoTourism Initiative and the response was really wonderful from the International Travel Trade. In October I headed north to Quebec to the ATTA travel show an amazing network of some of the finest ecotourism and adventure operators in the world and we are hoping together with the State to bring this amazing seminar to New Mexico in 2011. In November I joined the NMTD on the New Mexico stand at World Travel Market and again helped in promoting EcoTourism to a larger worldwide audience. After London I was invited down to Marrakech to attend the PURE LIFE EXPERIENCES show – the newest luxury and eco travel show in the world and met many wonderful agents from around the world who were extremely impressed and excited about our new offering in our State.

At this time you can find many articles online (we’ll forward these links) to see the local press we have received thus far in the State and in addition to this we are going to be in Travel & Leisure in their MARCH issue in their WHERE NEXT page of amazing places to visit! I am also working with Outside Magazine on their march/April issue on a feature article and also with Conde Nast Traveler who will be doing a full feature later in the year!

We are off to a strong start with our Initiative and the best part of it all has been meeting such wonderful and committed people around the State who have shown their passion for making sure this program becomes a very successful and sustainable economic reality.

And these Ecotourism New Mexico pages are now live! This will be the hub from which we will continue to update with news, events and resources, and a place you can interact and share useful information with other like minded eco-adventuralists!

It is essentially your resource to tap into and contribute to, so stay tuned as it ramps up over the coming months.
